police regionalization PLANS
EASTERN REGIONAL MON VALLEY POLICE DEPT (ERMVPD)

Ideas have been discussed over a number of years for regionalizing police services to better serve the residents. The North Braddock budget in 2023 had a police budget for $582,200 with a full-time chief and part-time officers. Finding a new policing system could better serve residents with full-time police officers and consolidated resources.
Discussions started for a regional department when East Pittsburgh dissolved their police department in December 2018 and the State Police assumed police patrol in that borough. Five communities then agreed in 2019 to participate in a state study for police consolidation. These towns included North Braddock, Braddock, East Pittsburgh, Rankin, & Whitaker. Those original plans later dissolved in 2020-2021.
East Pittsburgh, North Braddock and Rankin are now working on a charter agreement since 2022-2023 to start the creation of the Eastern Regional Mon Valley Police Department.
North Braddock voted to approve the charter agreement on June 27, 2023. Rankin council approved the charter agreement on July 11, 2023. East Pittsburgh approved the charter agreement on July 18, 2023. All three boroughs will now move forward with establishing the regional department for operations starting in 2024. There was a public town hall listening session held on Sept. 28, 2023 for residents to ask questions and voice concerns on moving forward with regionalization.
Mayor Cletus Lee, Council President Lisa Franklin-Robinson, & Council Member Juanita Giles were appointed to serve on the regional police commission for North Braddock.
Police chief candidates are being interviewed for consideration. Applications were being accepted for patrol officers.
